The recent PETA commercial banned from airing during the Superbowl claims they do. The ad showcases women getting frisky with fruit and vegetables ending with the statement;
"Studies show vegetarians have better sex, go veg."
Oh to be that pumpkin.
Seriously though a little more information and little less bumping 'n' grinding would have been helpful PETA. Where exactly are these suggestive studies you're touting in your ad? How do you rate the sex as better?
Frequency? Enjoyment? Duration?
The studies PETA mentioned have eluded me, thanks to all the buzz about the ad all I could find were more comments about it.
I did however find articles sighting nutritional reasons that some vegetarians have lower than average libido's which certainly impairs the ability to have better sex. Desire being the root of the act (pun intended).
Some vegetarians, specifically those that don't supplement their diet with sufficient amounts of protein, and zinc may find their sex drive in neutral.
Zinc, usually found in meat, seafood, and dairy products facilitates the production of testosterone in the human body. If sex were a car testosterone would be the gasoline, in other words you're not going anywhere kinky without it.
A diet lacking in protein leads to the production of globulin, which acts to bind and nullify the testosterone hormone. Similar to the engine sludge in a vehicle that's missed a few oil changes, leading to a decrease in gas mileage ( to milk the car metaphor one more time) .
Vegetarians that supplement their diet correctly have nothing to fear. Those that don't, should, so they can cash in on all this better sex they're supposed to be having.
Unable to find these supposed studies I turned to my own genius, trying to imagine what those studies would be like. I imagine they would revolve around a group of vegetarians and a group of non-vegetarians, comparable in age, answering the same set of questions about their love lives.
Factor in that by and large most vegetarians are healthier than non-vegetarians. They generally consume less calories and have a more nutritious diet. Logic follows that the healthier an individual is the better the quality their sex.
That being said vegetarians probably do have better sex, not because they don't eat meat but because they are typically in better shape than non-vegetarians.
Conversely though being a vegetarian is not the only road to better health. Thus my conclusion is that healthier people, not exclusively vegetarians, have better sex. The banned PETA ad is true to a point, and sexy as hell but still misleading.
Becoming a vegetarian tomorrow won't make you a stallion by the weekend.
